NEWSLETTER AUGUST 2004 SPECIAL AUGUST 2004 NEWSLETTER On Thursday, August 19, 2004, we took the next step in our fight to preserve Oswegatchie Hills from development and to protect the Niantic River and Long Island Sound from pollution. In partnership with The Friends of the Oswegatchie Hills Nature Preserve, we filed for Intervener Status in the Oswegatchie Hills zoning case. Intervener Status is set up by the Connecticut General Statutes, paragraph 22A-19. Under this law, individuals or groups can become party to proceedings on environmental grounds. (An individual can file on his/her own, but an organization must be represented by counsel.) We have retained Paul Geraghty of New London as our attorney and he has filed the necessary affidavits with East Lyme. This move was taken when it became obvious that the developer is extremely persistent and seems to care little for our environmental concerns. We took this step cautiously because of the legal expenses that will be incurred. We are proceeding one step at a time on a pay-as-you-go basis. Therefore, we are asking our membership and all concerned citizens the following: 1. If you have made a pledge to our legal defense fund, please mail your check as soon as is convenient 2. If you are a member and have not contributed to the legal fund, please reconsider and mail a check. The average contribution has been $100, but any amount will help. 3. If you have already contributed, thank you for making this initial step possible. Please communicate with friends and neighbors who you feel are interested, and ask them to contribute as well. Make checks payable to Steven Heller, M.D., Treasurer. Payment by VISA or MasterCard is also available. Please make your contribution now online. On a personal note: As with most people I know, I hate to ask for money. I am sure you are inundated with requests almost daily to help fund a variety of causes, many of them worthwhile. The Rive and the Hills are my passion and I love the Sound. I sincerely hope you agree. Fred Grimsey, President & Founder |
