LONG ISLAND SOUND STUDY STEWARDSHIP INITIATIVE

Long Island Sound Study Stewardship Initiative In-Depth

The Stewardship Initiative’s goal is to identify places with significant biological, scientific, or recreational value throughout the Sound and develop a strategy to protect and enhance these special places. It follows through on recommendations made in the Comprehensive Conservation and Management Plan and the 2003 Long Island Sound Agreement.

In February and March 2004, the Long Island Sound Study held a series of public meetings to share information regarding the Stewardship Initiative and to hear from communities around the Sound regarding ways we could better protect the Sound’s coastal resources. Attendees were asked to provide feedback to the Long Island Sound Study via a survey.

The Stewardship Initiative is a collaborative effort involving public and private organizations. Technical support is provided by Audubon New York, the Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection, New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, Regional Plan Association, Save the Sound, the US Environmental Protection Agency and the US Fish & Wildlife Service.

Following is a summary of the information presented at those meetings.
